If your business generates health care risk waste (HCRW) eg. medical, clinical, lab waste etc, you are classified as a HCRW generator and therefore required by law to comply with the Western Cape Health Care Risk Waste Management Act (2013), and its regulations.
These regulations place a legal obligation on HCRW generators to implement various compliance obligations.
1. Quarterly Audits
Quarterly audits assist with compliance with the regulations. The purpose thereof is to ensure your staff and patients are safer by reducing risks related to poor handling or disposal of HCRW, and assist by highlighting any training gaps your staff may need.
2. Training
A HCRW generator HCRW must provide training to all personnel in its employ who are involved in the management of health care risk waste.
3. HCRW Management Plans
A HCRW generator, who generates 20 kg or more of health care risk waste per day, when calculated monthly as a daily average, must prepare a health care waste management plan, and it must be reviewed annually.
